PRIVATE INVESTIGATOR DOUGLAS Rayburn felt discouraged. It was time he let his client know that unfortunately, in this case, the police were right. There were no leads. It was as if his daughter had disappeared into thin air. No one had seen anything. He’d taken his time retracing their steps through Tahoe.

Apparently, they had a wonderful family vacation. From there, all they knew is that they were driving through the pass to get to Sacramento and somewhere along the line, foul play occurred. Mr. Fontaine and their son were left for dead. Mrs. Fontaine and their car were missing. It was telling that even though bulletins had been sent out nationwide on the car, no sightings had been reported. It was all very odd and curious. His instincts told him there was more to this case than met the eye. He’d swear by it.

Forensics estimated the father and son had been there for about fourteen hours before they were found. That’s a lot of time to get away. No one was even looking for her during those first critical hours. She could be anywhere really, even across the country by now. Even out of the country for that matter.

But he didn’t think so. He would bet she was still close. The trail was just a little too cold, too neat and clean. If whoever took her had been traveling, there would’ve been someone, somewhere who saw something. They would’ve found some sort of evidence by now.

No, he’d lay odds she was still in the area. Of course, within this great mountain range you could be lost forever. Surely these mountains held many secrets.

Douglas had one other idea he decided to give a try. There were several small little communities dotting the area. He was going to spend some time in each of them posing as a retiree looking for real estate. He would spend his nights in the local hangouts. He would sit and listen. That was what he was good at. Maybe a clue would turn up. Criminals often brag about their exploits, especially when they’ve been drinking. It was a shot in the dark, but worth a try. He’d spent twenty-five years as a cop. The one thing he loved about his job now was he could spend two weeks on one lead if he so desired. The police just couldn’t put that much time into one case.

He dialed Mr. McCall to let him know of his plans.
